Further Dublin Bus Strike Disrupt Culture Night Plans

Commuters, students and the general public have been left frustrated and angered following a string of public transport strikes which have taken place in Dublin this year.

Quite often the strikes coincided with typically busy commute days or public holidays. A lot of people found themselves in difficult situations logistically and it has become a broken record of sorts.

The industrial action which is in association with Siptu is directly related to a pay rise disagreement between the company, workers and the union itself. At present Dublin Bus and Unions have agreed to partake in talks to end the disagreement however neither parties are willing to compromise on the matter of pay rise.

Earlier this year the labour court recommended a yearly salary increase of 2.75pc but this was denied by the workers. The agreement would have been for a minimum of three years but was turned down by employees. This pay rise would cost the company 30 million euro.

Earlier this year a similar deal was implemented with Luas workers with an increase of 3.8pc yearly. This current Dublin Bus industrial action is said to be an attempt to bridge the gap between the company's workers and that of Luas Networks.

Two more days of strike have been planned for this coming week. Dublin Bus will not operate on Thursday and Friday due to the ongoing dispute. Unfortunately these dates coincide with a much anticipated Culture Night which is due to be held in the capital this Friday. Thousands are expected to attend the various events dotted around Dublin locations that evening.

Dublin Bus had planned a number of free bus routes on the night to support the event. It has a long standing tradition of doing this for the past ten years. The industrial action will now result in these services being canceled if strike action occurs as planned this week.

Those wishing to attend Culture Night Events are advised to make alternative public transport plans due to the disruption of service on the night.
