About the Course

Management is one of the most rewarding and important skills you can acquire. It is the role of an effective manager to have business development skills plus knowledge of finance and project management. This highly rewarding programme is designed for newcomers to business and management. Whether you work in the commercial, semi-state, state or voluntary sector, management skills are required at many levels and are much sought particularly in challenging times of recession.  
 
 

Course Aims & Objectives
The Advanced Certificate in Management course sets out clear guidelines for effective management by helping participants develop their own management style, manage information and communication, plan and manage resources and recruitment. The principles of Business management, Finance, Supervisory Management, Business Development, Project Management and other key management skill areas are explored.

 

The Advanced Certificate in Management course identifies the roles and responsibilities of management and provides a comprehensive framework for future development. Discussion sessions, case studies on management and class exercises make this a highly rewarding and practical course. Students are assessed by project, assessments and examination. This is an excellent course for individuals seeking to work in Business or Management.

The Advanced Certificate in Management programme deals with ways to effectively manage people and provides solutions to people management issues.

Award & Qualification

The Advanced Certificate in Management is awarded by FETAC and is a Level 6 Major Award recognised under the National Framework of Qualifications (NFQ). It is a programme which exceeds 15 hours tuition a week and is open to national and international students who seek to work and study during their time in Ireland. This programme also satisfies Student VISA requirements for students from non EU countries.

Course Overview

Business Management
Designed to help you understand the role and function of management in different situations, this module analyses the internal and external environment, the management process, human resource management issues and solutions.

Business Development
There are unique opportunities available to all organisations. This module explores opportunity analysis, market entry strategies, direct marketing, sales & the value proposition, Key Account Management, Sales Management.

Finance
The Finance module offers the learner with understanding, knowledge and practical skills in order to have the ability to understand the basics of finance and how money works. Areas covered include: Understanding Financial Statements, Budgeting and Cashflow Management, Costing and Pricing, and Capital Budgeting.

Supervisory Management Skills
Aimed at people who are currently employed at supervisory level, or those wishing to progress to this level. It will teach participants to practise effective supervisory management skills, develop a customer oriented quality service consistent with best practice and standards. Areas covered include: Analysis and Decision Making, Quality and Customer Focus, Planning Organising and Prioritising, and Strategic Planning and Change Management.

Communications
Communication skills are a highly valued attribute in any workplace and this module aims to bring out the best possible standard of communication in the learner. There will be six core topics on this module as well as one specialist topic which will be undertaken. These include: Information Gathering, The Communication Process, Non-verbal Communication, Aural and Oral Skills, Reading and Writing Skills, and Interactive Skills.

Project Management
The successful completion of this module will allow students to manage projects effectively, such as analysing and planning projects, creating, structuring and organising projects using project management tools and recognising the importance of teamwork in project management.

Areas covered include: Project Management Fundamentals, Risk and Quality Management, Change and Configuration Management, Managing People, Initial Planning for Projects, Project Management and Control, Managing Contracts for Projects.

Employment Law
Learners on this particular module will develop an understanding of the sources of Irish Employment Law and have the ability to demonstrate detailed knowledge of the characteristics of a contract of employment. Areas covered include: The Regulatory Framework, Contracts of Employment, Discrimination, Dismissal and Redundancy, Health and Safety at Work, Collective and Employment Law.

Training & Development
Training and Development is one of the key areas of effective business management. This module aims at teaching students to develop appropriate learning and development policies and procedures as well as understanding and applying training needs to suit the business environment. Modules covered include: The Context of Training and Development within an organisation; Training and Developing Employees; Determining Content and Preparing Training Material; Design and Delivery of a Training Session.

Progression
This programme has been designed in consultation with FETAC to provide a pathway to students to level 6 Advanced Certificates or level 7 Ordinary Degree programmes and directly into employment.

Career Prospects
As the programme combines practical learning with fundamental management concepts, it provides an excellent base for any student embarking on a career in business or management. You will be capable of gaining employment in areas such as marketing, accounting, computing, insurance, travel, banking and retailing. The blend of business and management will make you an attractive candidate to a range of employers.

Methodology
The principal method of learning is through lectures, course notes, assignments and projects. Students are expected to read recommended texts to complement course materials. The FETAC Level 6 Advanced Certificate in Management is only awarded to students who successfully complete all assignments, projects, lectures as well as examinations.

Duration and Cost
The Advanced Certificate in Management – Level 6 is a one year programme, divided into two ten week semesters. Semester 1 is Feb– April 2010 and Semester 2 is Oct- Dec 2010. The cost of this course is 2,650.00 Euro which includes Exam fees. Lectures and tutorials take place two days per week , Wednesday & Thursday.
