| The Certificate in Business Studies is a comprehensive 12 month programme which will provide you with the relevant knowledge and skills to be successful in business. The course seeks to enable you to make a significant contribution within the modern business, commercial and administrative environment. The programme will provide you with business skills to deal with the current difficult economic climate. You will also be equipped with the practical skills to succeed in today’s highly competitive workplace. |

Award & Qualification
The Certificate in Business Studies is awarded by FETAC and is a Level 5 Major Award recognised under the National Framework of Qualifications (NFQ). It is a one year programme which exceeds 15 hours tuition a week and is open to international students who seek to work and study during their time in Ireland. This programme also satisfies Student VISA requirements for students from non EU countries.

Protection for Learners
Under section 43 of the Qualifications (Education and Training) Act 1999 Learner Protection arrangements have been put in place with two other FETAC Education providers.
Course Modules
Business Law
This module is introduced into the Certificate in Business Studies as a means to provide the learner with an understanding of the main areas of law that impact on business. It focuses on both the theoretical and practical applications of business law. The module will consist of 5 core units: The Irish Legal System and the Business Environment; Contract Law; Company Law; Conveyancing; and Employment Law.
Marketing Practice
The module is designed to enable students to learn and apply the principles and practices of marketing. Students who complete this module will be able to work effectively as a marketing assistant, understand the functions of a marketing department and understand the role of marketing in everyday life. It comprises of 5 key topics: The Marketing Environment; Product; Price; Promotion; and Place, Segmentation, Targeting & Positioning, Branding.
e-Business Studies
Learners on this programme will be taught the importance of technology in today’s workplace as well as learning to appreciate the benefits and opportunities presented by combining business and technology. Some of the core subjects include: Development of e-Business; Network Security; e-Business Applications; Planning for e-Business; Impact of e-Business.
Business Management
Designed to help you understand the role and function of management in different situations, this module analyses the internal and external environment, the management process, human resource management issues and solutions. It is an excellent exploration of business management theory and practice.
Personal Effectiveness in the workplace
Learners who undertake this module will be given the opportunity to develop, practise and gain credit for a range of key generic personal and interpersonal skills which are important in dealing with many situations in the workplace. Areas such as presentation skills, team working and holding meetings are covered.
Communications
Communication skills are a highly valued attribute in any workplace and this module aims to bring out the best possible standard of communication in the learner. There are six core topics on this module as well as one specialist topic which will be undertaken. These include: Information Gathering, The Communication Process, Non-verbal Communication, Aural and Oral Skills, Reading and Writing Skills, and Interactive Skills.
Progression
This programme has been designed in consultation with FETAC to provide a pathway to students to level 6 Advanced Certificates or level 7 Ordinary Degree programmes and directly into employment.
Career Prospects
As the programme combines practical learning with fundamental business concepts, it provides an excellent base for any student embarking on a career in business. Successful graduates will have many professional opportunities open to them. You will be capable of gaining employment in areas such as marketing, accounting, computing, insurance, travel, banking and retailing. The blend of business skills and work experience gained by students on this programme makes them attractive candidates to a range of employers.
Work Experience
A unique feature of the FETAC Level 5 Certificate in Business Studies programme is the work experience component. It is an integral part of the educational process and allows the student to acquire hands-on experience in their chosen field of work. Learners are responsible for arranging their own work experience placement which may be completed on a part-time basis over the duration of the course or may be completed 'in block' during holiday periods. The core units of this module are: Planning and Preparation, Experience, and Review and Evaluation.
Methodology
The principal method of learning is through lectures, course notes, assignments and projects. Students are expected to read recommended texts to complement course materials. The FETAC Level 5 Certificate in Business is only awarded to students who successfully complete all assignments, projects, lectures as well as examinations.
Duration and Cost
The Certificate in Business Studies – Level 5 is a one year programme, divided into two ten week semesters. Semester 1 is Feb- April 2010 and Semester 2 is Oct - Dec 2010 . The cost of this course is 2,650.00 Euro which includes exam fees. Lectures and tutorials take place two evenings per week and on Saturday.
