The course is intended for students wishing to pursue a career in information processing and for those who may wish to undertake further studies in the area of computer programming or networking. Learners will also acquire important web and computing design skills. The diverse nature of the syllabus ensures that learners acquire a broad range of industry-related skills upon which a successful career may be built.
The programme will provide you with practical IT - Information Technology skills needed to succeed in the current difficult economic climate.

Award & Qualification
The Certificate in Information Technology is awarded by FETAC and is a Level 5 Major Award recognised under the National Framework of Qualifications (NFQ). It is a programme which exceeds 15 hours tuition a week and is open to international students who seek to work and study during their time in Ireland. This programme also satisfies Student VISA requirements for students from non EU countries.

Protection for Learners
Under section 43 of the Qualifications (Education and Training) Act 1999 Learner Protection arrangements have been put in place with two other FETAC Education providers.
Course Overview
The Certificate in Information Technology will introduce you to the basic principles, technical skills and theories used in computer software applications, operating systems and the administration of an IT network. Students are introduced to the Internet, Database Methods, Computer Programming and Communications in the first semester. Meanwhile, in the second semester students will gain an understanding of Computer Architecture & Systems, E- Business, and Personal Effectiveness.

Course Modules
Computer Architecture & Systems
This module will teach students to understand and appreciate the fundamental role played by computing systems in the modern world of industry, education, communications and business. It comprises of five core units: Introduction to Computer systems, Computer Architecture, Data Communications, Operating Systems, and System Applications.
Computer Programming
Students undertaking this module will learn the concepts of programming and the techniques involved in constructing small programs. Successful learners will be familiar with industry standard programming practices and will have the skills to test and construct software programmes.
The module consists of four core subjects: Programming Constructs, Array Processing, Character and String Processing, and Procedures and Functions.
Database Methods
The aim of this module is to help the learner understand the fundamental database concepts and grant students with practical experience in database design, implementation and organisation. Upon successful completion of this module, the learner will be able to understand, use, and create databases for a wide range of applications.
It consists of three core units: Basic Database Concepts; Database Design, Implementation and Organisation; and Additional Database Operations.
e-Business Studies
Learners on this programme will be taught the importance of technology in today’s workplace as well as learning to appreciate the benefits and opportunities presented by combining business and technology.
Some of the core subjects which will be taught include: Development of e-Business; Network Security; e-Business Applications; Planning for e-Business; Impact of e-Business.
Information & Communication Systems
The student will learn to operate effectively within an IT environment and you will learn the functions of various items of hardware and software used in computer systems as well as valuing the importance of the growing impact of the internet on business and society. The core units developed in this module are: Information Processing; Processing Tools; Data Processing; Data Communications.
Communications
Communication skills are a highly valued attribute in any workplace and this module aims to bring out the best possible standard of communication in the learner. There will be six core topics on this module as well as one specialist topic which will be undertaken. These include: Information Gathering, The Communication Process, Non-verbal Communication, Aural and Oral Skills, Reading and Writing Skills, and Interactive Skills.
Personal Effectiveness in the workplace
Learners who undertake this module will be given the opportunity to develop, practise and gain credit for a range of key generic personal and interpersonal skills which are important in dealing with many situations in the workplace.
It will aid students to learn how to manage their work and make it more effective for the organisation as well as develop a range of skills relevant to their daily activities.
Work Experience
During this course, students will undertake a work experience period. It is an integral part of the educational process and allows the student to acquire hands-on experience in the chosen field of work. Learners are responsible for arranging their own work experience placement which may be completed on a part-time basis over the duration of the course or may be completed 'in block' during holiday periods. The core units of this module are: Planning and Preparation, Experience, and Review and Evaluation.
Career Prospects
Career opportunities include web design and management, administration, computing, banking, insurance, travel and many other business service organisations. Work experience is undertaken as part of this course.
Methodology
The principal method of learning is through lectures, course notes, assignments and projects. Students are expected to read recommended texts to complement course materials. The FETAC Level 5 Certificate in Information Technology is only awarded to students who successfully complete all assignments, projects, lectures as well as examinations.
Duration and Cost
The Certificate in Business Studies – Level 5 is a one year programme, divided into two ten week semesters. Semester 1 is Oct – Dec 09 and Semester 2 is April 2010 – July 2010. The cost of this course is 2,650.00 Euro which includes exam fees. Lectures and tutorials take place two evenings per week and on Saturday.
