Course Overview
The Diploma in Criminology & Forensic Psychology provides you with a comprehensive insight into criminal behavior and the criminal mind. It is a fascinating course that will open new doors into the world of Crime Scene Investigation, Forensics, Criminology and Forensic Psychology.
Students will quickly learn the skills of criminal profiling, using numerous case studies from real life crimes and investigations. From vandalism, and ant-social behavior, through to the most serious of crimes such as murder and terrorism, the course will show how psychology can help us identify the offender.
Areas covered include Crime Detection and investigation, forensic investigation techniques, forensic science and DNA, profiling and the criminal justice system. Three key areas are delivered by three highly qualified lecturer who specialise in the areas of ; Criminology, Forensic Investigation and Forensic Psychology.
Course Aims
Three key areas covered are: Criminology, Forensic Investigation and Forensic Psychology. On the lecturing team is a Barrister, Head of a Crime scene unit for An Garda Siochana and a Doctor of Psychology.
The Criminology part of the course examines the Criminal Justice system, criminal courts, offences against the person, criminal law and various types of crimes.
The Forensic Investigation part of the course examines the traces left behind crime scenes and the clues and evidence which can be examined. This is a fascinating area and looks at fingerprints, blood samples, the role of DNA, photographic evidence, firearms and residue.
The Forensic Psychology part of the course examines what causes individuals to commit crime and how events and experiences can shape the type of adults we later become. Students will quickly learn the skills of criminal profiling, using numerous case studies from real life crimes and investigations. Progression:
Former graduates, now work in An Garda Siochana, Welfare Service, Forensic Science Laboratories, Psychologists/Counsellors, Youth Offender workers. Others have decided to pursue further study and are pursuing Degrees in Law, Social work, Biological Sciences, Sociology.

The fee for this programme is €1,350. The fee includes all tuition, registration, assessment and online notes.
Applicants are required to pay a minimum deposit of €300 to secure a place on the programme. The balance of fees are due on or before programme commencement.

Qualified Lecturers

Katherine Finn: Criminology & Law
Katherine is a lawyer of 14 years' experience, the first 11 years of which she spent in practice as a solicitor, mostly in the field of criminal law. She was called to the Bar in October 07 and commenced practice as a barrister the same month. She continues to practice mainly in the area of criminal law. She has extensive lecturing experience, at, among others, the Law School of the Law Society of Ireland, where she taught various legal subjects to trainee solicitors for many years, the National College of Ireland where she lectured in family law, criminal law and employment law, and CMI, where she currently delivers courses in criminal law and criminology. She holds a BA from UCD, a postgraduate diploma in criminology from DIT, graduating with first class honours, a diploma in the history of art from Trinity, and a BL from the Kings Inns.

John Schley Garda Sergeant - Forensics & Crime Scene Investigation
John is a Garda Sergeant for An Garda Siochana . He is head of the crime scene investigation unit in South County Dublin and lectures for CMI in the areas of Forensic Investigation and Crime Scene Analysis.
Dr Neil Kenny:
Neil holds a Doctorate in Psychology with a specialism in disorders. He lectures in Forensic Psychology at CMI.
Myles Byrne:
Forensic Investigation lecturer, Works in Garda Siochana, Phoenix Park, Dublin. Specialises in recording, labelling and storage of evidence and works between lab and CSI units.
