Environmental Studies

Course Overview

 

The Environmental Studies course is ideal for newcomers to study of the environment and this course is open to people with various backrgounds. It is also suited to individuals working or intending to work in this growing area and for employees of organisations intending to devise and implement an environment strategy.

 

The environment is the burning issue of the 21 century and is now a significant growth area for employment. Large and small organisations are now investing sums of money to meet the stringent environmental laws imposed on them and it is clear looks set to expand. Now more than ever is the time to get a qualification in Environmental Management.

 

This course is a precursor to the Environmental Management Diploma course (level 8) course which is awarded by NEBOSH. Students who successfully complete this Environmental Studies course will be eligible to proceed with the NEBOSH Diploma in Environmental Management offered by CMI.

 

Course Aims


You will learn how to address the causes and put forward solutions to contemporary environmental problems; Analyse current regulation and legislation – internationally, regionally and nationally – to address environmental issues; Independently respond to issues arising from the environment, Understand key practices of environmental management and the processes involved in their implementation.

 

You will learn about the earths natural resources, examine the relationship between population and the environment, define sustainable development and Agenda 21, explore the greenhouse effect and understand the difference between conservation and preservation. You will also examine EU Law and Regulation, Ethics and the keys areas of an Environmental Impact Assessment. The course also provides you with the ability to implement current best practices of environmental management and is an excellent preparation for the NEBOSH Environmental Management Diploma which is also offered by CMI.

 

You will also examine the environment in relation to EU Law and Regulation, Ethics and the how to devise an Environmental Impact Assessment. Students will be able to debate international protocol, regulation and legislation that guide the resolution of these issues. This Environmental Studies course will provide you with the ability to implement current best practices of environmental management.

The fee for this programme is € 1350. The fee includes all tuition, registration, assessment and online notes.

Applicants are required to pay a minimum deposit of €300 to secure a place on the programme. The balance of fees are due on or before programme commencement. Applicants that are unemployed or work part-time may avail of a two part installment plan. Terms & Conditions apply.

Dermot Guiney

 

Dermot Guiney : Environmental Lecturer

Dermot qualified with a Degree in Building Services Engineering from D.I.T., Bolton St. in 1996. He has over twelve years experience in the Irish building services consultancy industry, involved in mechanical and electrical services design, site supervision and project management, and health and safety assessments on a wide range of building projects. Whilst working as an engineer he furthered his interests in Health and Safety, Environmental, Energy and Sustainability issues by qualifiying in 2008 with a Masters Degree in Environmental Decision Making from the Open University. He is a lecturer in Environmental Management with CMI

Environmental Course Assessment

The assessment is in the form of a project (50% of marks) and a 3 hour exam (50% of marks).

Progression:

 Upon completion of the course, students may wish to pursue a degree in the subject. Career paths open to current graduates include: hydrologist, environmental planning, green investment planning, environmental ecologist, ecological modeler, environmental chemist, conservation scientist, forester, atmospheric scientist or geoscientist. Many of these jobs are with government agencies, while others are with private firms and nonprofit organisations.

Can I progress on to do a Diploma in Environmental Management?

Yes CMI offer all graduates of this course progression on to do a NEBOSH Diploma in Environmental Management.

Am I qualified to be an environmental manager after this course?

You will be qualified do be an environmental manager after completing the Nebosh Diploma. The environmental studies provides you with a solid foundation in the subject, but it is not enough on its own to allow you to become an environmental manager.
