Overview
The level 3 OTHM Technical Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety covers the essential skills and knowledge required to embrace a career in health and safety. This entry level Occupational Health and Safety certificate course is designed for health and safety trainees and apprentices interested in starting a career in health and safety.
At technical level, you are learning about the fundamentals of working in health and safety and acquiring knowledge about health and safety legislation and risk and incident management.
Course Content
This Occupational Health and Safety Technical Certificate course enables you to gain an understanding of health and safety practices in a working environment. It provides an insight into how to manage workplace issues and covers the areas you would encounter in a health and safety role. Core modules include:
Level
The OTHM level 3 Technical Certificate in Occupational Health & Safety is accredited to level 3 (England) which is comparable to level 5 (Republic of Ireland). The Technical Certificate is awarded by OTHM qualifications who are internationally recognised and regulated by Ofqual (Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation).
IOSH Accredited Programme
The OTHM level 3 Technical Certificate in Occupational Health & Safety is accredited by the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH). Students can access IOSH Student Membership for the duration of their studies and successful graduates meet the academic requirements for Associate (AIOSH) or Technical (Tech IOSH) membership of IOSH (subject to meeting experiential criteria).
Progression
Successful Graduates can progress to the IOSH accredited Level 6 Certificate and Diploma in Occupational Health & Safety.

Ronan is a chartered health and safety expert who has extensive experience working within the manufacturing, facilities management, construction and utility contracting industries. Ronan teaches risk, and H&S practice with CMI.
Roy Scott is the Head of Environmental Health & Safety & Environmental Social Governance (ESG) for Turmec Engineering, an ISO 45001 certified company. As part of his current role, Roy is implementing a robust Sustainability Program for the company, with specific focus on EHS. Before joining Turmec, Roy was the Global Head of People Data Privacy at Facebook. Prior to this role, Roy worked across multiple compliance functions within Flex, including his role as Global Lead for EHS, covering 100 manufacturing facilities, across 100 countries, with 200,000 employees. He brings over 30 years of experience in the health and safety field, right through from being a hands-on safety office to a Global EHS Director. Roy teaches on several units on the Diploma in Health and Safety with CMI.
Niamh works as Head of Health and Safety in AIB across all branches throughout the Republic of Ireland. She holds a BSc in Environmental Health and an MSc in Occupational Health and Safety and Ergonomics She teaches Unit 1 Technical Certificate in Health and Safety with CMI.
Rachel Beirne: Occupational Health & Safety
Rachel began her career in food safety as a food safety manager and consultant. She then moved into the role of HSEQ Auditor, auditing contract catering, cleaning and facility sites against ISO 9001, 14001 and OSHAS 18001. In 2017 she took on the role of HSEQ manager for a large contract catering company where she heads up their strategic HSEQ planning as well as ensuring compliance and maintaining the company’s ISO standards across their 150+ sites.
She has a BSc & MSc in Environmental Health and safety Management, as well as 14 years industry experience. She is an affiliated member of the Irish Institute of Training and Development (IITD) and a graduate member of Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH). Rachel teaches unit 1& 2 Certificate and Diploma in Health & Safety.
