    The Occupational Health and Safety Certificate course is an excellent qualification for wishing to become a Health and Safety officer.

    This higher level Certificate in Health and Safety course provides core knowledge and skills on areas such as Risk assessments, risk and incident management, promoting a positive health and safety culture, and health and safety practice.

    The Certificate in Occupational Health & Safety is awarded by OTHM qualifications which is a globally recognised awarding body. OTHM qualifications are approved and regulated by Ofqual (Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation) .

    LEVEL: The Occupational Health & Safety Certificate is recognised on the RQF Regulated qualifications framework to level 6 (England) which is broadly equivalent to a level 7 in the Republic of Ireland.

    Graduates of the level 3 and level 6 Certificate are eligible to apply for 'Tech IOSH' membership. 

    Successful Level 6 Certificate students, satisfy entry requirements to do the Diploma in Occupational Health & Safety and only need to complete 3 additional units.

    Relevant level 3 (England) OR level 5/6 (Ireland) at Certificate/ Diploma in a related subject area such as:  

    • Science and Technology, Legal and regulatory systems, workplace safety and health, risk management, safety and health management, Occupational health and hygiene, Occupational psychology, information technology, and literacy and numeracy. OR
    • Level 3 Certificate in Occupational Health & Safety or equivalent health & safety qualification.
    • Mature learners Age 21 years or more with 2 plus years work related experience .

    ENGLISH requirements (for non-native English speakers only)

    • IELTS 5.5 Reading & Writing 
    • Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) level B2 OR
    • Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE Academic) 51

    Unit 1: Health and safety management principles and policy
    Learn the key principles of health and safety policy, the internal, external and change factors that influence practice, and how these are operationalised in an organisation’s health and safety systems. Learners to undertake a critical review of an organisations health and safety policy. 
    Unit 2: Health and safety management practice
    Learn to translate organisational policy into an effective occupational health and safety management operation, including the auditing of health and safety management performance and operations. Learn the application of corporate social responsibility and ethical codes of conduct on management, and the critical factors in managing the occupational health and well-being of workers.

    Unit 3: Risk and Incident Management
    Learn to identify, address and manage risk and incidents in relation to your role as a health and safety practitioner, including understanding strategies to assess and evaluate risk, techniques to control risk, cause of loss events and analysis of loss data. 
    Unit 4: Promoting a positive health and safety culture 
    Learn the range of factors that influence health and safety behaviours, performance and culture in the workplace, including the impact of human and organisational factors, leadership styles, organisational structure and consultation arrangements. Develop the skills to evaluate and improve the health and safety culture and performance within an organisation.

    How do I book

    Pay a minimum deposit of €300 to secure a place and the balance of fees are due 3 weeks before programme commencement.

     Students must still pay a deposit of 300 euro to secure their place irrespective of whether they are being sponsored by an employer or other body. 

    Once payment is received in full for the course by the sponsor, the student will receive a 300euro deposit refund.

Rachel Beirne: Occupational Health & Safety

Rachel began her career in food safety as a food safety manager and consultant. She then moved into the role of HSEQ Auditor, auditing contract catering, cleaning and facility sites against ISO 9001, 14001 and OSHAS 18001. In 2017 she took on the role of HSEQ manager for a large contract catering company where she heads up their strategic HSEQ planning as well as ensuring compliance and maintaining the company’s ISO standards across their 150+ sites. 

She has a BSc & MSc in Environmental Health and safety Management, as well as 14 years industry experience. She is an affiliated member of the Irish Institute of Training and Development (IITD) and a graduate member of Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH). Rachel teaches unit 2 Control Hazards in the workplace.

Roy Scott
Roy Scott is the Head of Environmental Health & Safety & Environmental Social Governance (ESG) for Turmec Engineering, an ISO 45001 certified company. As part of his current role, Roy is implementing a robust Sustainability Program for the company, with specific focus on EHS. Before joining Turmec, Roy was the Global Head of People Data Privacy at Facebook. Prior to this role, Roy worked across multiple compliance functions within Flex, including his role as Global Lead for EHS, covering 100 manufacturing facilities, across 100 countries, with 200,000 employees. He brings over 30 years of experience in the health and safety field, right through from being a hands-on safety office to a Global EHS Director. Roy teaches on Unit 5 Maintaining a Safe workplace with CMI.

Niamh Connolly

Niamh works as Head of Health and Safety in AIB across all branches throughout the Republic of Ireland. She holds a BSc in Environmental Health and an MSc in Occupational Health and Safety and Ergonomics She teaches Unit 1 Technical Certificate in Health and Safety with CMI. 
Ronan Peace

Ronan is a chartered health and safety expert who has extensive experience working within the manufacturing, facilities management, construction and utility contracting industries. Ronan teaches risk, and H&S practice with CMI.

Ken Harney

Graduated from Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen Scotland with an M.Sc. in Health Safety and Risk Management. 15+ years’ experience in health and safety across various industries including mining and mineral exploration, quarrying, construction and manufacturing. Currently employed at Danone Wexford as a Senior Health and Safety Officer. Areas of interest include Risk Management, Cultural Safety and First Aid. Ken teaches unit 3 Risk and Unit 4 OHS Culture for CMI>
