    The Occupational Health and Safety Certificate course is an excellent foundation course for those starting a professional career in Health and Safety.

    The Certificate in Occupational Health & Safety is awarded by OTHM qualifications which is a globally recognised awarding body. OTHM qualifications are approved and regulated by Ofqual (Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation) which is the regulator in England for further and higher education qualifications.

    LEVEL: The Certificate in Occupational Health & Safety is recognised on the RQF Regulated qualifications framework to level 6 (England) which is broadly equivalent to a level 7 in the Republic of Ireland.

    Graduates of the level 6 Certificate are eligible to apply for 'Tech IOSH' membership. The level 6 Diploma in Occupational Health & Safety  is IOSH accredited, and graduates are eligible can apply for 'Grad IOSH' membership. 

    Certificate students can progress to do an additional 3 units to complete the level 6 Diploma in Occupational Health & Safety. OTHM has progression arrangement with several universities that allows you advanced entry into corresponding degree year/top-up and Master’s/top-up programmes.

    CMI's unique incremental approach to learning provides you with the pathway to success.  There is no more need to worry about exams. Each week you will attend live online classes which are recorded for playback. You will submit scheduled draft and final assignments each term and will receive feedback and recommendations for improvement.

    Practical : Many of the assignments relate to organisations and are practical in nature. If you have work related experience and/or academic research skills, this will be of enormous benefit. 

    Some of the assignments include: write a case study of an organisations health and safety management system;  describe risk assessment methods and process of incident management with supporting examples; compile a strategy to improve the health and safety culture of an organisation. 

    Students with minimum work experience will benefit from the textbooks provided for each unit and supporting documentation and tutor feedback to assist them through their study. 

    Relevant level 3 (England) OR level 5/6 (Ireland) at Certificate/ Diploma in a related subject area such as:  

    • Science and Technology, Legal and regulatory systems, workplace safety and health, risk management, safety and health management, Occupational health and hygiene, Occupational psychology, information technology, and literacy and numeracy. OR
    • Level 3 BSC Certificate in Occupational Health & Safety or equivalent health & safety qualification.
    • Mature learners Age 21 years or more with 2 plus years work related experience .

    ENGLISH requirements (for non-native English speakers only)

    • IELTS 5.5 Reading & Writing 
    • Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) level B2 OR
    • Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE Academic) 51

    *Supporting certified proof of past qualifications and work related experience CV is required to be attached to application booking plus English level competency (if applicable).

    Unit 1: Health and safety management principles and policy
    Learn the key principles of health and safety policy, the internal, external and change factors that influence practice, and how these are operationalised in an organisation’s health and safety systems. Learners to undertake a critical review of an organisations health and safety policy. 
    Unit 2: Health and safety management practice
    Learn to translate organisational policy into an effective occupational health and safety management operation, including the auditing of health and safety management performance and operations. Learn the application of corporate social responsibility and ethical codes of conduct on management, and the critical factors in managing the occupational health and well-being of workers.

    Unit 3: Risk and Incident Management
    Learn to identify, address and manage risk and incidents in relation to your role as a health and safety practitioner, including understanding strategies to assess and evaluate risk, techniques to control risk, cause of loss events and analysis of loss data. 
    Unit 4: Promoting a positive health and safety culture 
    Learn the range of factors that influence health and safety behaviours, performance and culture in the workplace, including the impact of human and organisational factors, leadership styles, organisational structure and consultation arrangements. Develop the skills to evaluate and improve the health and safety culture and performance within an organisation.

     Students must still pay a deposit of 300 euro to secure their place irrespective of whether they are being sponsored by an employer or other body. 

    Once payment is received in full for the course by the sponsor, the student will receive a 300euro deposit refund.

Warren is a Health and Safety professional experienced with working within the construction and manufacturing industry with reputable companies in the UK and Ireland. He currently works for a construction company, Extraspace Solutions, managing EH&S on multiple projects running simultaneously and also at a production facility in Dublin. He has health and safety qualifications from University College Dublin and the British Safety Council.

He lectures the British Safety Council Occupational Health & Safety Certificate Course.

Rachel Beirne: Occupational Health & Safety

Rachel began her career in food safety as a food safety manager and consultant. She then moved into the role of HSEQ Auditor, auditing contract catering, cleaning and facility sites against ISO 9001, 14001 and OSHAS 18001. In 2017 she took on the role of HSEQ manager for a large contract catering company where she heads up their strategic HSEQ planning as well as ensuring compliance and maintaining the company’s ISO standards across their 150+ sites. 

She has a BSc & MSc in Environmental Health and safety Management, as well as 14 years industry experience. She is an affiliated member of the Irish Institute of Training and Development (IITD) and a graduate member of Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH). Rachel teaches unit 2 Control Hazards in the workplace.

Hugh Sexton 01~2
Hugh is an Environmental, Health, Safety and Quality Manager with architects Scott Tallon Walker.  He holds an MSC in Environmental , Health & Safety and a Post Grad Diploma in Safety, Health & Welfare at Work and Degree in Engineering. Hugh teaches unit 1 in the Health & Safety certificate course at CMI.
Brian Fitzgerald
Brian is the Quality Health Safety and Environmental Manager with CBRE/Johnson Controls in Dublin and ensures QHSE compliance across CBRE clients throughout Ieeland. He previously held senior positions with Veolia FM sites. HE has an MSc in Environmental Health & Safety Management and Post Grad in Applied Leadership. He is a Chartered member of IOSH and Certified Safety Professional and Lead auditor. He lectures on Unit 2 on the Cert in HEalth & Safety with CMI.
