Big changes to the PMP exam from July 2026.

The PMI has announced that the new ECO Exam content Outline will come into effect for all PMP® exam tests from July 2026.

An exact date in July is not yet given but it would be safe to assume students studying the PMP exam preparation course should complete the PMP exam (reflecting the older ECO 2021 exam content outline) before the end of June 2026.

Last year we saw PMI Project Management Institute release the PMBOK 8th Edition with the digital version launched in November 2025 , and the official physical book launched in January 2026.

There are significant changes on the horizon from the current ECO Exam content outline 2021 versus the new ECO Exam content outline July 2026 guide.

The new version of the PMP® exam coming into effect from July 2026 shows a big change in the Domain weightings and focus . Alot of rebalancing is occurring based on dramatic current market forces impacting on project management roles. You might remember Domains refer to the high-level knowledge areas that are essential to the practice of project management.

They are divided into :

  • BUSINESS ENVIRONMENT – highlighting the connection between projects and organization strategy
  • PEOPLE – emphasising the skills and activities associated with effectively leading a project team
  • PROCESS – reinforcing the technical aspects of managing a project

So each of these domains is being upgraded with a change in weighting and focus.

The domain Business Environment changes from from 8% to 26% overall exam weighting, focusing on organizational strategy, compliance, and governance.

The domain People decreases from 42% to 33% weighting, still crucial but with a new leadership focus.

The domain Process drops from 50% to 41% weighting, emphasizing tailoring and integration.

The old 2021 ECO Exam has 180 questions (still valid until end of June 2026) includes mostly multiple choice, hot spot, and limited drag‑and‑drop options and features.

The new 2026 ECO Exam, has a slight increase in question to 185 questions. There are more interactive question formats, including: Pull‑down lists, Image‑based matching, Hotspot scenario decision questions and drag‑and‑match formats to make it as interactive and engaging as possible.

The new PMP exam from July 2026 is designed to test practical reasoning, not memorization, making you think out the best options to scenarios presented.

The new PMP focus areas that are different to the current PMP syllabus are on six main areas:

1. Artificial Intelligence (AI)

Artificial Intelligence now features prominently in the 2026 ECO, emphasizing AI‑enabled planning, estimation, risk prediction, forecasting, reporting, and its expanding role in project decision‑making and analytics.

2. Sustainability & ESG

Sustainability and ESG considerations become formal exam themes, requiring awareness of environmental impact, social responsibility, and ethical decision‑making within project environments.

3. Value Delivery & Outcomes

The 2026 ECO shifts focus from producing deliverables to ensuring measurable business value and outcome‑driven project success.

4. Stakeholder Engagement

Stakeholder engagement now emphasizes human‑centred communication and deeper collaboration, reflecting the growing importance of influence and relationship‑building in modern projects.

5. Adaptive / Hybrid Delivery

The ECO increases emphasis on hybrid, agile, and AI‑assisted delivery approaches while reducing the weighting of predictive methods.

6. Broader Strategic & Business Leadership

Project managers are expected to demonstrate stronger strategic and business leadership, including governance, alignment to organizational strategy, value realization, and acting as business partners rather than task coordinators.

New changes coming

As the new PMP exam will reflect the new ECO exam content due to be released in July 2026, this has an immediate implication for students starting PMP® Exam preparation courses in 2026. They will need to ensure they are finished their course under the old syllabus and have completed their test by 30 June 2026.

Contrary to what many students and trainers may think, the PMP exam is NOT based on A Guide to The Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK® Guide). The PMBOK® Guide is only one of several references PMI uses to design their PMP exam questions. Instead, the exam is based on The PMP Examination Content Outline. A new version of this outline was published in 2025, and PMI will use this new outline as the basis to update the exam.

PMI has announced there is no cut off date in July 2026 yet announced for the current PMP exam but this blog will be updated as soon as we know more.
